  • UNIZIK has placed an indefinite ban on all final-year students’ “signing off” celebrations due to recurring incidents of violence, chaos, and disruption of academic activities.
  • Any student caught engaging in such activities risks rustication, while outsiders who participate may face arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct.

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has announced an indefinite ban on the practice of “signing off” celebrations by final-year students.

The decision was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke, who said the measure takes immediate effect.

According to the university, the ban became necessary following repeated incidents of violence, chaos, and disruption of normal academic activities often associated with the events.

“The university management wishes to inform the public that, effective immediately, all forms of orchestration, popularly known as ‘signing off,’ by final-year students are completely and indefinitely banned within the university premises,” the statement read.

It further noted that the gatherings had attracted unauthorised individuals on campus, raising concerns about safety and security for students, staff, and the wider university community.

“In fulfilment of its obligation to maintain order, protect life, and safeguard property, the university has taken this decisive step. Any student found engaging in signing-off activities will face severe disciplinary measures, including possible rustication. Outsiders involved in such activities may also face arrest and prosecution,” the statement added.

The university management assured students and staff of its commitment to ensuring a safe and conducive learning environment, urging students to focus on their academic work and report any incidents that threaten peace and order on campus.
