Most times, when people ask me this question about how many WordPress plugins should they install on their site, I usually take the question as how many plugins are too many? I think that’s what the real question should be, How many WordPress plugins are too many on a single website?
Although there is a lot of argument on how many plugins a single website should have and the impact those WordPress plugins will have on website reliability, speed, performance, and usage so because of that I will be explaining this topic in details for the newbie in WordPress web design.
In this article, I will explain how many WordPress plugins you should install on your site. I will also be talking about how plugins can and cannot affect your website.
Running your website with the perfect combination of WordPress plugins is what you wanted and I make that happen in this article.
Having said that, so let’s dive in!
How WordPress Plugins Actually Works?
Before I go deep into how many WordPress plugins you need to install on your site, let me hint you about what WordPress plugins are and how they really work.
WordPress plugins are like apps on your website that help you add new website features and functionality such as optimizing for SEO, customizing side bars, creating custom menu, adding listings, and more. Plugins are written with PHP programming language.
That is why you must choose a good WordPress hosting company that gives you easy tools to manage those resources and run your website efficiently.
Why Are Plugins Important For A WordPress Website?
The purpose of plugins is to extend WordPress to do almost anything you can imagine.
WordPress plugins can help you improve SEO, increase security, manage users, convert visitors to customers…plugins can help you do anything you can think of doing on a WordPress website. Without WordPress plugins, scaling your business website on WordPress will be difficult.
Although the WordPress core provides a strong publishing framework, it is the plugins that are typically responsible for making WordPress the most popular website builder in the world.
Let me tell you this, as at the time of writing this article, there are over 54,600 free WordPress plugins available in the official WordPress plugins directory.
What does that tell you?
It tells you that, the number of total WordPress plugins available has grown over the years and there is a lot to be done on WordPress. That’s the power of plugins.
What New Designers and Developer Think of WordPress Plugins?
Due to minor errors faced by newbie WordPress web designer/developers from plugins, most of them have a sense of fear or limit towards plugins.
Majority of them get worried about their website speed, performance, security, reliability, etc. This is mainly because designers and developers get really disturbed when they are troubleshooting a client’s websites. I myself I’ve been in this situation many times.
What is a lesser amount of plugins to use on your website?
I think the problem is not the quantity of plugins, but the quality.
You can have a lot of good WordPress plugins operating on your website without any issues, but if you mistakenly add a single poorly written plugin, it can slow down or disrupt your website.
When this happens and you ask for troubleshooting help, your hosting company or another developer will blame the quantity of plugins.
This makes sense because troubleshooting a website with 6 plugins is much easier than troubleshooting a website with 26. Quantity of plugins makes their job harder.
Honestly, I don’t think the problem is the number of plugins rather it’s the selection of plugin to use that matters.
When you choose the right set of plugins to use on your WordPress website, your perspective about plugins will change and you will realize that the numbers of plugins you install doesn’t matter but rather the quality of plugin you choose to install is what really matters.
How To Choose The Right WordPress Plugins To Install On Your Site?
Another frequently asked question I do see is “how do I choose the right plugins for my website?”
If free plugins are what you’re looking for, then the only advised place to get it from is the official WordPress plugins directory. The official WordPress.org plugin directory also makes it easier to choose good plugins.
There, you will able to see the plugins rating and reviews provided by other WordPress users. You can also see when the plugin was last updated and how many websites have it installed.
In contrast, if you are looking into getting a paid or premium plugin, then make sure you’re getting it from a well-reputed WordPress company or developer. If you are unsure, then look around for reviews and testimonials.
Another place where you can get reliable premium WordPress plugins is on Code Canyon, before you purchase any plugin you can first check out comments from other buyers, check the ratings and at the same time ask for support from the support tam even before buying the plugin.

How Many WordPress Plugins Should You Install? How many WordPress Plugins are too many?
You should install as many plugins as important to run your website and grow your business, although it’s quite common for a business website to have at least an average of 20 to 30 plugins.
If the kind of website you’re building has many advanced features, then you can use up 50+ plugins.
For example, the number of active plugins on my website (Sulato.com.ng) is 21. This is to show you that it’s not the quantity but quality of plugins that slow down your website.
Even though my website runs on dozens of plugins and custom code snippets, my website still loads in half a second (489 milliseconds).
It’s not about how many plugins you install on your site but how quality and well coded the plugins you install are. That is what determines the better performance of your website.
